Moss shortens a roof's life
Moss grows under the edges of the shingles and lifts them, and it holds water against the roof for days after the rain stops. In the Willamette Valley that is one of the most common reasons shingles wear out early. A thin green film is a maintenance job. Thick clumps lifting the shingles mean water is probably already getting underneath.
Firs and maples make it worse: they shade the roof and drop needles and leaves into the valleys, where they hold moisture and feed the moss. More on what moss does to a roof.

How we do it
No pressure washer on the shingles
We clear the moss and debris off by hand and with low-pressure methods that don't strip the grit off the shingles, then apply a moss treatment made for roofs. The moss that's left dies and loosens, and the rain carries it off over the following weeks. We clear the valleys and the roof edge, then clean the gutters and downspouts so the water has somewhere to go.

What a cleaning doesn't fix
Cleaning takes the moss off. It doesn't put grit back on bald shingles or flatten edges that have been lifted for years. If the shingles underneath are worn out, we'll say so, and cleaning them is not where your money should go. Here's what a replacement involves. If the roof is sound but a few shingles or a piece of flashing need attention, that's a repair, and we can usually do it on the same visit.

How often should a roof be cleaned in Woodburn?
It depends on the trees and which way the roof faces. A roof under firs, or with a north side that stays damp, usually needs attention every year or two. A roof in full sun may go much longer. Once it's clean, keeping needles and leaves off it is what slows the moss down.
Can I pressure wash the moss off myself?
Not on asphalt shingles. Pressure washing strips the protective grit off with the moss, and shingle manufacturers warn against it. It can take years off a roof in one afternoon. A mossy roof is also one of the slickest surfaces around a house.
Does moss mean I need a new roof?
No. Moss isn't the damage; what it does underneath is. Once the moss is off we can see the shingles. Sometimes they're fine, sometimes a few need replacing, and sometimes the moss was hiding a roof that's already worn out. We tell you which.
Do you clean the gutters at the same time?
Yes. Whatever comes off the roof ends up in the gutters, so we clear those too and check that the downspouts drain away from the house.
